Nancy Pelosi
A conversation with Nancy Pelosi
Keywords:
A conversation with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Many people are calling for the impeachment of Bush/Cheney and a particularly well-written plea by former presidential candidate George McGovern appeared in the Washington Post. But in spite of solid legal grounds for impeachment, Congress will never move to impeach. These are the major reasons why I believe this is so: (1) Nancy Pelosi would become president if Bush/Cheney were impeached, and any move on Pelosi's part to support such a movement would have the appearance of being self-serving. (2) President Pelosi would inherit the significant mess that this administration has made and doesn't want to be in the position of having to clean it up so close to a general election. It is politically expedient to use Bush/Cheney as whipping boys which will help Democrats to gain the Presidency and Congressional seats in the next election. (3) Few want Pelosi, an unpopular Speaker Of The House, with a poor record, to be President. (4) Lack of partisan support. While most Americans would like to see Bush/Cheney replaced, the wrong Speaker Of The House is in place to move into the White House.
i was willing to give you a chance, but my decision is in....you need to be replaced for the good of the democratic party. I find nothing you say of interest. You never have any idea of what your talking about. Your remarks about the democtratic nominee process, was little of substance.you can;t tkae control and get anything done.why do you think the america people voted democrat last time????wake up.I would be ashamed if i were tyou not voting for hillary.is it because you know she would make sure things got done and that would be too much work for you and the good ole democratic men(who are trying to push hillary out of the race0? shame on all of you. why isn't someone sticking up for hillary? obama gets away with all his megativity and when hillary says one thing, here comes all the bad reporting...obama is just as bad, wake up nancy...do you really think obama could win against mcain, if you do then we have real problems.i have always voted democrat but if obama gets the nominee i will vote for mccain and i will then become a indepenadnet, yes i know i am only one person, but be ware there are alot of others out there just like me.white, age 53 female, middle class.obama is a liar too.he said the kennedy;'s help finance and bring his father over fron kenya...lie/how can you vote for obama when his judegment of having and going to church with the pastor for over 20 years? ayrs/renko? please judegement, trust????? you will see alot of dmeopcrats going to mccain and its not because of the healthy discussion obama and hillary are having, its because the good ole democratic boys want to run things and it doesn;t include a lady...with the name of hillary..
80% of the word "knows" what? That Global Warming is being questioned by many more knowledgeable than Al Gore. This lady is a lightweight. Not a leader; and certainly not an intellectual. She's where she is because she's great at fund raising for the party.
Nancy's being an embarrassing and ineffectual ass. Making too typically American hubristic noises over there in Tibet. Moral superiority - even staged - on our part is hollow and worse counter-productive, as it opens us up further exposure of what a paper tiger and hypocrit we are. When the murdered Tibetans exceed the murdered Iraqis then we should still "cork-it." She and McCain both need to get their naive arrogant declarations back here where they are even more meaningless. Where the hell do we get these adolescents. Are there no adults left?
To Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, a high government office, I was hoping that Ms Pelosi was tongue tied and had hoped she would correct herself. Please I never heard of the following government offices called FannieMac and FreddieMae. How about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Also, Charlie you pay $100.00 a gallon for gasoline/oil. Paying a $100.00 for a barrel of oil is $101.00 too, too much. Take Care.
Speaker Pelosi and her Democrat majority have been a severe disappointment. Her answers last night explained why they haven't gotten anything done: they are waiting for the President to agree with them so they can act! Her responses (not that she answered Charlie's questions) were nothing but more rehash of earlier Democratic whining. I learned only that Nothing Has Changed! It doesn't appear that they will be the "change" party unless Barack replaces many party leaders.
Amazed and disappointed at the apparent undemocratic selectivity of the C Rose blog monitors to totally obliterate any evidence that Pelosi was a quest 2/28/2008. Whose performance didn't pass muster? Hers? His? Or the blogs? Whatever, they need a new line of work. Censorship in their line of work comes close to neutralizing their-line-of-work.
I guess it depends on personal bias, but CR went after Nancy very aggressively IMO. He doesn't come close to asking tough questions with the same attack style of Bush. As for personal bias, as much as I respected and appreciated CR's relationship with William Buckley, he gave much of his personal bias away. At least we can now put aside any remaining doubt about where his loyalties lie.
"Incredible as it may seem amidst talk of recessions, job cuts and stagnant wages, NumbersUSA's Capitol Hill Team finds reports and signs everywhere that House Speaker Pelosi is negotiating to give millions of U.S. jobs to foreign workers," NumbersUSA President Roy Beck said today. The Democratic Pelosi's backroom deals appear to be motivated by fear that a group of freshmen Democrats may get most Republicans to help them force a vote on the enforcement-only SAVE Act (Secure America with Verification Enforcement). That bill -- with 147 bi-partisan signers in the House and Senate -- primarily would drive millions of illegal aliens out of their jobs. But Pelosi is trying to ensure that if the bill comes to a vote it will include huge increases in H-2B and H-1B visas for foreign workers of all kinds, and that it will include millions of legal work permits for all the illegal aliens currently holding a job. "I want every American to be aware of Speaker Pelosi's callous attitude toward the 23 million, less-educated working-age Americans who do not currently have a job," Beck said. "This group of Americans without any college education and without a job increased by 2 million between 2000 and 2005 at the same time Congress was importing 1.5 million foreign workers of the same education level, according to research by the Center for Immigration Studies. "Nobody in Congress has a worse grade (F-minus) than Nancy Pelosi when it comes to protecting American jobs, American wages and American working conditions from the downward pressures of massive immigration. As the head Democrat, she stands in stark contrast to most of the newly elected Democrats who are pledged to protecting American workers and fighting illegal immigration. Unfortunately, Pelosi, the most radical Member of Congress on the immigration issue, is using her power as Speaker of the House to try to wreak even more damage on the most vulnerable of American workers and legal immigrant workers in this country. I urge all concerned Americans to contact their Members of Congress and express opposition to Rep. Pelosi's outrageous push for more foreign work visas."
This lady (Pelosi), is the biggest liar, and the WORST speaker of the House EVER!!!!! For one thing, NOBODY in WWII Even came close to our borders (Pearl Harbor not being on the mainland). Pres. Bush is protecting us not only now, but his decisions are protecting us for the future!!! Nancy Pelosi isnt "reading" the us public and her own "approval rating", people want HER out even more than Bush!!! Pelosi is a hipocrite in the largest extension of the word!!! She says one thing, and does another completely! Please, how can she be taken seriously. Thank God she will be outta there at the next election! est
I have never seen, EVER, a more amateur interview than this one. Mr. Rose asked the Speaker questions and then proceeded to interrupt and cut off NEARLY ALL of her responses!! Interviewing 101 class, rule number one is - let your interview subject actually answer the question you ask. I mean, if you're not going to let the subject answer any of your questions, doesn't that also mean that you don't think your own questions are even worth answering? Why did Mr. Rose even bother to ask her anything if he wasn't going to let her answer anyway? Truly the worst single interview I have ever seen in my life. If Mr. Rose was in ANY way compensated for this interview, he should return the check. And, of coarse, send an apology to the Speaker and anyone else he interviews in this fashion. Wow. REALLY BAD.
I couldn't imagine anyone more feckless than Dennis Hastert, but his successor seems to be right up there. She might want to try explaining how taking away their best young ppl is going to help the countries from which they come, or improve their relations with us.
I am an odd 25 year old who works within the financial community. I got my first real tastes of both Barak Obama and Paul Volcker right here thanks to you. I was very excited to say the least to here that Volcker will be advising Obama. I am sure you are quite interested yourself. You think you could get Volcker to come on your show again?
Dear Charlie Rose: I would like to remove Rachel's comment from the top of the list and instead thank you for introducing me to Barak Obama. I first saw him here as far as I can remember over two years ago. At the time you were recommending his book and enjoyed your dialog with him so much that I picked it up and loved it. At the time I have to be honest I joked I would never get to vote for such an honest man. So once again thank you for putting me ahead of the curve. You are truely someone special. Right in the middle of the 18-30 age group and life-long listener to the one and only Charlie Rose!
Dear Charley Rose: We have repeatedly called upon Senator O'Bama to specifically disavow his relationship with far North 46th Ward Chicago Alderman Joseph "Joey" Moore, an agent in Chicago politics of the Mannheim Road, DuPage County criminal organization, and to disavow O'Bama's former law client, financier and indicted defendant Antoin "Tony'' Rezko. Resko remains now locked up in the Federal Criminal Lockup in Chicago's Loop, awaiting trial in the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. O'Bama continues to run for the Democratic Presidential nomination. This message is intendended to address your pro-O'Bama guests and has nothing to do with ethnicity, with race, with religion or with whatever O'Bama's parent's named him! Both of these associates of the Senator are white. Both reside in the Chicago area. I represented candidate Michael Harrington, a young African American, in successful litigation against Moore during Harrington's candidacy, contesting Joey "the Mooch" Moore's seat on the Chicago City Council. I am also familiar with Tonie Rezko's racketeering history. O'Bama has a long history with Moore and with Rezko. It is not enough for O'Bama to merely mumble upon the revelation about his associations that ""I consider this a mistake on my part and I regret it." See Chicago Sun Times, November 6th, 2005 and January 10, 2008 front page article on Chicago criminals. We have been forced to endure the deceit, incompetency and stupidity of the Young Bush Administration. All of us make mistakes in our associations in life. Mistakes, after full and fair explanation, can be forgiven. Whether Senator O'Bama's platform and idea's are vague and frustrating are an arguable political issue. We deserve specific, explicate assurance that criminal racketeers like the Sicilian crime organization, Alderman Moore, or Tonie Rezko. who have poped up in the Senator's past, are not going to show up with offices and power in an O'Bama administration. please explain the report abuse option under comments? does it refer to the comment itself as being abusive? What is the consequence of reporting abuse?
Pelosi is monumentally disappointing for me. Giving Shrub a pass on impeachment neuters her whole political raison de etre. Redemption for us, her, the nation, the world is down the toilet. Does Shrub/Cheney have something on her? ..<pgrph>.. And corruption led by earmarks marks her disdain for us all by assuming we all are as venal and for sale as she and her cohorts. <<< pgrph >>> For a compelling 156 page pamphlet on the seriousness of our political abyss, read THE END OF AMERICA, by Naomi Wolf. It's powerful and poignant. It stays with you!!
as a disinterested observor, Pelosi did not answer the question about what will happen in Iraq if the troops are removed- sounded like she wished them to remain
Nancy Pelosi is a smooth, polished poltician, especially when Charlie Rose lofts softballs at her for the entire interview. Ask her some tough questions for a change or at least make her answer the questions you DID ask.
What a person and the good she is doing for the United States. There will be lives saved as a result of her work. Somebody tough has to clean up the mess we are in. Thank goodness that there are people like Nancy Pelosi. Republicans have to first realize that the bleeding has to stop. 3000 lost in the towers and now how many lost in the war up to 5-6000 now, total of 8000 American lives lost. HELLO??? I knew it back when the office went to the Bush. All those mothers whose sons have past away, Now how would they vote? For Bush? It is a little different now isn't it? A person like Nancy is answering the call. Thank goodness we have a true American fighting for the value of an American life. Hey Bush those lives are worth something, Like living! Are the Republicans blind? The voice of the American people have spoken, Nancy is just doing their will. It is about time we have somebody who is a true Patriotic American to combat the evil of the present Adminstration. Make our country great again Nancy, and may god bless you, as for the Republicans, forgive them father they know not what they do..........
Did she say this "We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long ways to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as "Americans"." Did she say this, if so you got to be nuts. why should hard working Americans pay taxes and windfall on the hard earned dollars to give to some poor scmuck who broke the law sneaking into our country? Ms. Peloski you are splapping the American people in the face. You have no business in politics.
I am impressed by the intelligence of Mrs. Pelosi, she is one strong woman that deserves our unlimited respect and support for what she is doing for Democratic party vis-a-vis America. She is honest and very determined in taming the current quagmire we are into. I pray more power to her, we have lost tremendous number of man power as well as finace for the worng war (Iraq war).
Yes we have a woman for the first time as Speaker of the House. Unfortunately she is also the first harridan in that seat as well. She is only bettered by Hilary in divisiveness and innuendo. The coming year is going to be quite a ride!!!
A very poor interview. Not only did Pelosi not answer most of the questions asked, many of her replies were instead vicious personal attacks on the president. She certainly is entitled to her personal political preferences. But it is very bad for our country that she does not have the ability to voice them and argue them in an intelligent and polite manner. David J
Ted Koppel would never have accepted the evasive answers to your direct and open ended questions that Ms. Pelosi provided. She circumvented "Dingell"; "HR passed (I think one)"; "Congress's low approval rating" but trashed free speech for which you did not take her to task. I lean Democratic, but I don't think the Speaker has the much in the way of leadership abilities even tho the MSM adores her.
I just missed Mrs. Pelosi who graduated from Trinity College before I arrived as a young professor who taught theology there for 4 years. I think she is a very bright, beautiful woman and an astute politician. I wish she would focus on what the Democrats want to do and how they are going to get it done more than on the obvious failures of the present administration. My question is: Are we not being too arrogant when we think that the United States can be the moral leader of the world? Can we take responsiblity for the terrible things that happen to people in Darfur when we don't help the people in our own American City of New Orleans? What is Congress doing about the ridiculous injustices of the tax code? Congress has imposed this system on us, and it is a bit disingenuous for a member of congress to complain about it as if it come from some other source. Do we need Warren Buffet to tell us that the rich are not taxed enough and the working class is over taxed? We hear the politicians talking about education but they end up doing nothing about it. Let's make teacher's salaries tax-free. Let's encourage young people to go into teaching rather than Wall Street. Let's bring standards back into education. We are not competitive with people educated abroad because our schools are still a mess. Charlie said not a word about education. Charlie get off the science kick and let's talk about science and math in our increasingly irrelevant educational institutions. I have been teaching logic since 1972. In the last 10 years the students I teach cannot pass the same exams I was giving to students 20 years ago. Why? They are ill prepared for college work. Why can't politicians admit that they cannot solve all the problems we face in the US? If they would just stop adding to them, we might be better off. Some day we will be driving cars fueled by hydrogen made from water that produces water as a by-product. Our air will be cleaner and we won't have to fight wars to keep the Global Oil Market in tact. How I wish I could live to see that day.
Pelosi did not answer Charley Roes question most of the time. I am of the impression that she tried to reply oh how the House would answer. She gives me the impression that she is Not a Leader, but one that wants other people opinion. From this interview and other times she has spoken, I think she is the main reason that the Democrates and the President have a low approval rating.
It was very interesting to hear her views, takinf credit for a lot of legistion which really added up to a lot of nothing...compared to what she was going to do in the first 100 days...(zero results) That was a big let down. She made reference how the Republicans were the main cause of delay with progress in Congress. The reality is that they are promoting issues which most people don't have an interest in and lack the support to pass. She was critical of talk radio and felt "the other view" should be presented. I listen to both Liberal and Conservative radio. I must say that the Liberal stations have the most hateful comentators. Ms. Pelosi's San Fransico Radio host Ray Tagliaferro (sp?)(KGO 810)is without a doubt the most vicious, hateful radio host I have ever heard in 35 years of listening to talk radio. He refers to the President with the most vile names ever heard....bar room drunk stuff. Is that the view she is looking for? The same thing goes on in Los Angeles. The Conservative morning talk show hosts discuss issues and raise issues. The Liberal stations have hosts who make nothing but jokes about the President and other Republicans and conservative views. Very little is offered in the way of solutions to problems. This seems to be true of the Democratic leadership in W.D.C. Ms. Peolsi needs to address the real situation and promote serious radio hosts who take the issues seriously...and bring their names out into the public arena. Jim (Democrat) from Santa Clarita.
This was a very interesting interview. I look forward to more interviews with Democrats and liberals, which is lacking in so many other shows on TV. Conservatives dominate so much, even though they don't run everything any more. Pelosi is a very good speaker and communicator. I am so proud she is the first woman Speaker of the House. She represents women well. I hope that more women follow in her footsteps.
very thoughtful interview but there should have been a question about why so many americans have lost faith in washington as a whole. it's a big reason that there is so much interest in a third party candidate like bloomberg
I watched half the Pelosi interview and knew she was never going to get any tough questions and there were many to be asked. Having had the opportunity to meet Ms. Pelosi as a fund raiser for a non profit cause, I can sssure what Rose Show viewers saw last night was a cultivated stage presence and not the real Madame Speaker. To sum it up.....you would never want to be in a life boat with this self motivated pirana. Question everything and you will see the veneer crack...... and, then, stand back! Not one person's opinion.
I stumbled on Charlie Rose last night during a deliberate Paris Hilton avoidance manouever. How fitting that in trying to skip over those who represent everything bad (amoral, cheap, phoney, trite, opportunistic and false)in American culture I found something honest-to-God good in the form of Ms. Pelosi. I have never before heard her speak and I am quite honestly stumped. I can't remember when I heard a political insider speak so candidly without buzzword, cliche or spin.

I am wondering why Mr.Rose did not push the importantance of Mrs.Pelosi "breaking the marble cieling" when it was clearly something that his interviwee wanted to discuss. The topic was contained in the mentioning of her role as mother which became the easy way to contain such an important topic. What it truly means to be a woman at her level might be an interview in and of itself but I wish we were given a better taste.
Interesting avoiding of the topic of Cheney... Charlie focuses on the removal of funding from Cheney's office, calling it a joke and political. What he doesn't mention is that Cheney was trying to avoid oversight procedures, to keep secret documents about his and others' actions leading up to and during the Iraq war off the record. Cheney was trying to hide activities which will probably turn out to be illegal. To avoid congressional investigation he claims to be not part of the executive branch and thus not investigatable by congress. Absurd! Thanks for NOT mentioning any of this Charlie, I lose more respect for you all the time.
Very impressive interview of a very impressive politician. Very refreshing leadership after 6 years of this failed presidency. I especially liked Pelosi's response that Bush--or as Bill Maher has called him "President Sh*t-for-Brains--has become oblivious. That really sums up his presidency. Oh well, only 18 more months to go.
Is Stew really comparing Charlie Rose to Larry King?
I find myself pretty much 'trusting' Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her applied sincerity concerning Washington today [shields down\. In America she is a living classical, historical figure being the first woman speaker of the house, and I appreciate her deeply. She also arranges the political stage to make way for a woman seated as president, and America would be a far better place if she were seated as president today. Now if GW Bush and Dick Cheney were impeached she would be president. I question just why this hasn't happened but reach the conclusion the Democrats just lack the verve to do this, perhaps rendered passive by their own ongoing, applied [forgiving\ kindness. Speaker Pelosi has a outstanding web site 'The Gavel' which covers current events on a day to day basis here: http://speaker.gov/blog/ What? Vice President Dick Cheney is not smarter than a fifth grader? Any fifth grader could tell him that the office of the vice president is linked to the executive branch, not the legislative. He really should face prosecution for this open abuse of his privileged position. It troubles me that he is not being prosecuted as it indicates officials in place are simply looking the other way and not doing their assigned tasks, like the GOP Executive Branch did allowing for 09/11/01. Thank you for the great interview with Speaker Pelosi Mr. Rose, may I encourage only more of the same! [applause\
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the most outstanding political figure you have had on your show in years. She is brilliant, lucid, clever, and humble too. It's rare, indeed, for a politician to actually explain how our governance process works--yet she bothered to inform her audience. She's not arrogant. And she avoided trite phrases as well. Too bad she's not our presidnet but the world is, at the very least, fortunate enough to have her in a key leadership role to prompt everyone to achieve consensus for the common good. Please have her back on your show soon. She's a breath of fresh, sane air!
A great interview, one of your best. It was refreshing to hear a politician be frank, and yes, honest, to herself, to you, and hence, to we, the people. You pushed her for questions we want answered, and she anwered them, I would say, 95 out of 100. I especially liked what she said about the "Green" being America's next agenda. It was the Internet, now it can be "The Green." I enjoyed it, made my day. - Joyce, from Chico, California
Charlie's point of view in asking "Is this a joke" regarding not funding Cheney's office put Pelosi on the defense. I have been watching Charlie for 15 years. Perhaps he is getting older, not in touch in his elite bubble, or just loves access more than objectivity. I find it insulting to call it a" joke" to challege the most fascist government figure we have had in my generation. Charlie is a rare intelligent conversation but I find it less objective and very cynical.
