Is this director [Florian Henckel von Donnersmark\ talking about directing a new film about the Iraq Women? & was that film based on a book? Title & author Please?
Charlie has a few regulars--Norman Mailer, John Updike, Lorenzo Albacete--I hope that von Donnersmarck becomes another such regular.
I could just look at these two guys for hours -the fact that they are both so interesting to listen to as well is a huge bonus. I havent seen the movie yet, but hope to soon. Not sure I agree with Donnersmarck's comment re novels vs movies. It think it is true that he can do more in a movie, but also true that an audience can do more with a novel - use more imagination in other words. On the otherhand, "Shoah" could only exist as a film and I agree with where he has it on his inpriation list. I look forward to hearing and seeing more from him in the future.
Heès a very articulate and charismatic director but to be honest I found the movie pace a little plodding, the metaphors heavy-handed and the characters not completely fleshed-out as people; I really felt they were tools of the plot as opposed to individuals making decisions.
best film this year by far.
This german filmmaker is major, major, major. Best german since Verner Herzog who is a fan of Donersmarck, too. Thank you Charlie for giving me some insight into his brilliant mind.
Donnersmarck's gift is his focus. He's gone from studying in the former Russian literatureib the former Soviet Republic- to studying the classics at Oxford- to attending film school. My bet is that he will join the ranks of Kurosawa and Felini...if he hasn't already.
Am I alone in sensing Charlie's developed some kind of nonsexual guy crush on this Donnersmarck fellow? Charlie's had him on three times in as many months. Of course, Charlie's the man, and if he says Donnersmarck deserves my attention, Donnersmarck will have my attention. But still. ;)
The interview with filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was excellent. I found his story, of how he came to be a filmmaker and the perserverance to realize his vision, very inspirational. I will attempt to view his previous two visits 'to the table' and, of course, seek out his film.
