Auto-intoxication... the most important word throughout the conversation. The self-delusional aspect that comes along with having power is the most dangerous thing to ignore. This is so depressing. America sucks in many ways. The right sort of system wouldn't let this happen. Futile, talking about over-throwing the govermnent. Inevitable. 3:30am. Oh, what am I going to do!

I would have liked to hear about 1. use of realpolitik and how its influenced post WW2 US foreign policy (the legacy of an interventionist foreign policy) 2. discussion on political linkages - what they are and their use today in Iraq 3. relationship with India and Indira in 1971 4. the premium of prestige - the costs (morally and physically) 5. the discussion of how the timbre of the presidency has an effect on US popularity abroad. Overall quite satsfying. Dallek is a very intelligent chronicler who is very capable of setting the context of the information brought forth.
