George Templeton Strong (1820 – July 21, 1875) was an American lawyer and diarist. His 2,250 page diary, discovered in the 1930s, provides a striking personal account of life in the 19th century, especially during the events of the American Civil War. Historian Paula Baker described him as "perhaps the northern equivalent of South Carolina's Mary Chesnut: quotable, opinionated, and a careful follower of events."

a most easygoing interaction. i felt the gent's mental software extracted direct from my head (on obama, media, literature, hillary, etc.) oft enough i get more various views than my own. wed night, nice to relax - let the mind dilate. charlie's show is a wonder in this day and era.

What a treat to tune in and find another Obamaphile. I'd like to subscribe to Mr. Anderson's culture newsletter also.

This was excellent, but WHAT was Charlie Rose quoting from Gore Vidal's mouth supposedly in the last 20 seconds of the show. Charlie says something like: "Gore once said 'historical novels is only the historical nor novels'. What the hell did he mean?" Now Charlie, what the hell were you saying? I don't know this quote, but you and Kurt Andersen seemed well versed in it.
