Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
A conversation with director and screenwriter Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck
A discussion with director and screenwriter Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck about his first feature length film, "The Lives of Others" which is nominated for best foreign film at this year's Academy Awards. The film explores conditions in East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 through the eyes of a member of the Stasi, East Germany's powerful secret police service.

Excellent choice for an interview. Reminds me of a similar parallel in Shakespeareâ??s Hamlet when Hamletâ??s uncle as both murderer and adulterer spies on Hamlet to defeat him. East Germany had many reasons to hide from the realities of the second World War. The murders of innocent German civilians and enlisted German servicemen and the subsequent rape of the German female population by the conquering allied forces are well documented. It would appear that murder and adultery are willing partners in crime.
