Just because you're old and tired doesn't mean the energy isn't valid. Not that you, Updike, said that it is. The individual is the source of inspiration. The individual is the source of everything. We need more energy. More solitude. You can maintain that egotistical fuel if you only avoid people. It's your interaction with society that drains your creativity, unless those people are as independent as you are. I can conquer the world single-handedly. This is not naive. This is the proper persepctive.
