Michael Wermuth is the Director of the RAND Homeland Security Program. He oversees research into critical infrastructure protection, emergency management, terrorism risk management, border control, first responders and preparedness, individual preparedness, domestic threat assessments, domestic intelligence, and manpower and training. Since joining RAND in the summer of 1999, he has directed numerous projects dealing with homeland security, and for the past two years, he has been Manager of Domestic Counterterrorism Programs in the National Security Research Division at RAND.
Wermuth has an extensive background in government, including service as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Drug Enforcement Policy, as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, and as Chief Counsel and Legislative Director for United States Senator Jeremiah Denton of Alabama.
