John Sweeney is an American labor leader. He is President of the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation about organized labor. The union joined with the National Association of Working Women to organize office workers, and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) to organize nursing home workers.

Under Sweeney, the union began pushing for stronger federal laws in the area of health and safety, sexual harassment, and civil and immigrant rights. It also advocated for legally-mandated paid family leave, health care reform and a raise in the minimum wage.
