Michael Specter writes about science, technology and global public health for The New Yorker, where he has been a Staff Writer since 1998. His recent book, “Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens our Lives,” examines the growing fear of science, which has lead many people to shun vaccines despite their proven value, and spend billions of dollars on vitamins and supplements – despite increasing evidence that they are all but worthless (and sometimes worse.) He also writes about the how the obsession with organic food (and misconceptions about genetically modified food) could cause starvation in the developing world.
