Donald Henry Rumsfeld is an American politician and businessman. He was the 13th Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford, and the 21st Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush. Rumsfeld served under President Richard Nixon, served four terms in the United States House of Representatives, and served as United States Ambassador to NATO. He was an aviator in the United States Navy.
Rumsfeld was named Defense Secretary soon after President George W. Bush took office in 2001. After the House and the Senate shifted to Democratic control in 2007, Bush announced Rumsfeld would resign his position as Secretary of Defense.
Rumsfeld has won numerous awards, including a Statesmanship Award by the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress; James H. Doolittle Award by the Hudson Institute; Ronald Reagan Freedom Award; Distinguished Eagle Scout Award by the Boy Scouts of America; and 11 honorary degrees.
