Daniel Bergner is a staff writer for the New York Times Magazine and the author of three books of nonfiction. His latest, The Other Side of Desire: Four Journeys into the Far Realms of Lust and Longing, looks at such questions as, How do we become who we are sexually? How do we cope with the forces of desire? And how can we understand the relationship between the transcendent and the physical, between the wish for love and the anarchy of eros? The book has been called “riveting” by the New York Times Book Review and “poetic” by Slate. In the Land of Magic Soldiers: A Story of White and Black in West Africa received an Overseas Press Club Award for international reporting, a Lettre-Ulysses Award for the Art of Reportage, and was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. God of the Rodeo: The Quest for Redemption in Louisiana’s Angola Prison was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. As well as the New York Times Magazine, Mr. Bergner’s writing has appeared in Granta, Harper’s, Mother Jones, Talk, and on the op-ed page of the New York Times.
