Gene B. Sperling is an American economist and political expert, currently serving as a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. He is also on the staff of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he serves as Senior Fellow for Economic Policy and Director of the Center on Universal Education. He was also a consultant for the television series The West Wing.

Sperling was National Economic Adviser to President Clinton and director of the National Economic Council from 1996 to 2000. From 1992-1996, he served as deputy director of the National Economic Council while the Council was directed by Robert Rubin, who was promoted to Treasury Secretary. Sperling had been an architect of the Clinton economic plans while serving on the Clinton-Gore 1992 presidential campaign. He was known for his long hours, passionate commitment to his work, and detailed knowledge of economic policy.
