James L. Jones
James L. Jones is a four-star general. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2007 after 40 years of active-duty service. He was most recently NATO’s supreme allied commander in Europe (Jan 2003 - Dec 2006) and before that was the 32nd Commandant of the Marine Corps (1999-2003). He is a decorated combat veteran and his operational assignments include tours as Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC) and the 2nd Marine Division. He had command roles in humanitarian operations in Northern Iraq and Bosnia Herzegovina, served as the Marine Corps Senate Liaison Officer and was the Senior Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense William Cohen during the Clinton Administration.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he spent his youth in France and speaks French fluently. When he returned to the U.S., he attended the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. After graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1967 and sent to Vietnam where he served as a platoon and company commander. His military decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit with three gold stars, and the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Valor.
He is currently the President and CEO of the Institute for Energy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
