Clifford Alexander is an American lawyer, businessman and public servant. He was the first African-American Secretary of the Army.
Alexander was born in New York City and attended the Ethical Culture and Fieldston Schools there; graduated from Harvard University in 1955 and from Yale University Law School in 1958. He enlisted in the New York National Guard in 1958 and served briefly with the 369th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
