Wes Craven (born Wesley Earl Craven) is a film director and writer, best known as the creator of such horror classics as “Nightmare on Elm Street.” After early stints as a teacher and taxi driver, he became a sound editor for a post-production company in New York, his first film industry job. Then, in 1971, he co-directed “Together” with Sean S. Cunningham and has since gone on to numerous film successes. His second movie, “The Hills Have Eyes” (1977), won the critic’s prize at the Sitges Film Festival and “Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984) took the prize for best movie at the Avoriaz Film Festival. In 1999 he directed “Music of the Heart” (1999), a change of direction from the horror genre for which he is known. Other recent films include the “Scream” trilogy (1996, 1997, 2000) and “Red Eye” (2005).
