Barbara Hackman Franklin
Barbara Hackman Franklin is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Barbara Franklin Enterprises, an international trade consulting and investment firm headquartered in Washington, DC. She is a recognized authority on international economic and trade issues and corporate governance, and is a regular commentator on the PBS Nightly Business Report.
Franklin served as the 29th US Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush. Her background in government, academia, business and politics gives her a unique understanding of the interrelationships among these sectors. She applies that knowledge to her analysis of trends in commerce and the international economy, particularly with regard to the US-China relationship, an area in which she has worked extensively since serving as Secretary of Commerce.
She is a former Senior Fellow of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was one of the first women graduates of the Harvard Business School. In the course of her career, she has served five US Presidents. She is currently a director of Aetna, Inc, The Dow Chemical Company, GenVec, Inc., and MedImmune, Inc.
