Dr. Sylvia Ann Hewlett is an American scholar well known for her expertise on gender and workplace issues. She was the first woman to head up the Economic Policy Council - a “think tank” comprised of 125 business and labor leaders. Her articles have appeared in “The New York Times”, the “Financial Times” and the “Harvard Business Review”, and she has served as a consultant to several corporations and to UNICEF. She has taught at Cambridge, Columbia and Princeton Universities and held fellowships at the Institute for Public Policy Research in London and the Center for the Study of Values in Public Life at Harvard.
Her 1991 book, “When the Bough Breaks”, won three national awards including a Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Prize. Her other books include: “A Lesser Life”, “Child Neglect in Rich Nations”, “The War Against Parents” (co-written with Cornel West), and, most recently, “Creating a Life”, named by Business Week as one of the top 10 books of 2002.
Dr. Hewlett is Director of the Gender and Public Policy Program at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. She is also founding president of the Center for Work-Life Policy, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Century Association.
