Dr.Thomas Peter “Tom” Lantos, Ph.D has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1981, representing California’s 12th congressional district. He is the chairman of the House International Relations Committee, and a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. As chairman, Lantos threatened to block aid promised by President George W. Bush to Lebanon and free the funds only when Beirut agreed to the deployment of international troops on the border with Syria
Lantos is the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in the House. For three decades prior to his service in Congress (1950-1980), Congressman Lantos was a professor of economics, an international affairs analyst for public television, and took on a senior advisor role to members of the United States Senate.
