Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov is the Foreign Minister of Russia. He has worked for the government since 1972, when he was sent as a Soviet diplomat to Sri Lanka. In 1981 he was as a senior adviser to the Soviet mission at the United Nations, working in New York until 1988. He returned to the Soviet Union but by 1994 was back at the U.N. as the Permanent Representative of Russia.

On March 9, 2004, President Vladimir Putin appointed Lavrov to the post of Minister for Foreign Affairs. In this post, Lavrov has made it clear that the continuing development of Russia will be financially driven by oil profits given to Russia by the international oil companies who operate there.
