Zed Nelson is a British photojournalist whose work has been published extensively both in the UK and worldwide. From the war in Sierra Leone, to back-stage with the Rolling Stones, Nelson’s work is challenging and diverse, but always about people and the world we have made for ourselves. From iconic portraits to fly-on-the-wall reportage, Zed Nelson’s images form a compelling picture of life today.
Amongst his portraits, Nelson’s sitters have included such notables as Fidel Castro, Margaret Thatcher, and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. Nelson has lectured on photography at various universities and colleges in the UK and the USA. Recent assignments have been published in the “Sunday Times Magazine”, “Observer Life”, “GQ”, “Esquire”, “Time”, and “Life” magazine.
“Gun Nation”, a disturbing reflection on America’s obsession with guns, is one of Nelson’s most important projects to date. It has been published in twelve countries, won First Prize in the 1998 World Press Photo Competition, was awarded the 1998 Visa d’Or for Best Magazine Feature of the Year at the International Festival of Photojournalism, France, and was awarded the prestigious Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for photojournalism in the United States. Nelson also won first prize in the 1999 Nikon Awards.
