Amartya Kumar Sen is an Indian economist. Sen won the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences (“Nobel Prize for Economics”) in 1998, for his work on famine, human development theory, welfare economics, the underlying mechanisms of poverty, and political liberalism. His seminal papers in the late sixties and early seventies helped develop the theory of social choice.
In addition to the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, Sen received the received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India 1999, as well as an honorary citizenship of Bangladesh from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the International Humanist Award from the International Humanist and Ethical Union, and the Eisenhower Medal, for Leadership and Service USA, among many others.
