Ronald Dellums is a Democratic American politician, and the mayor of the City of Oakland, California. He was a U.S. Representative from California from 1971 until his resignation on February 6, 1998 and, following that, a lobbyist. He was the first African American elected to Congress from Northern California and the first openly socialist American Congressman since World War II.
Dellums served as chairman of the House Committee on the District of Columbia and the House Armed Services Committee. He also served on the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Post Office and Civil Service Committee, and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971.
