Richard Stengel is Time magazine’s 16th managing editor. As a senior essayist for Time, he notably covered both the 1988 and 1996 presidential campaign. He also wrote for The New Yorker, The New Republic, and the New York Times.

Stengel also authored several books including January Sun: One Day, Three Lives, A South African Town and You’re too Kind: A Brief History of Flattery. In 1993 he collaborated with Nelson Mandela on Mandela’s bestselling autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. He later served as co-producer of the 1996 documentary Mandela. In 2004, Stengel became president and chief executive officer of the National Constitution Center, a museum, education center and think tank in Philadelphia.
