Jason Epstein is an American editor and publisher and former editorial director for Random House, a position he held for forty years. He was responsible for the Vintage paperbacks, and in 1952, while an editor at Doubleday, he created the Anchor Books imprint, the first of the trade paperback formats. In 1963, during the New York City newspaper strike, he co-founded the New York Review of Books, with his then-wife, Barbara Epstein.

In 1979, Epstein launched the nonprofit Library of America. He has received the first National Book Award for Distinguished Service to American Letters and the Curtis Benjamin Award of the Association of American Publishers. In 2001, he wrote a book entitled ‘Book Business: Publishing Past, Present, and Future’ in 2001 and in 2004 he co-founded On Demand Books.
