George McGovernwas a United States Representative, Senator, and Democratic presidential nominee. He lost the 1972 presidential election in a landslide to incumbent Richard Nixon. He was most noted for his opposition to the Vietnam War. He is currently serving as the United Nations global ambassador on hunger.

He was appointed as the first director of President John F. Kennedy’s Food for Peace program. In 1962, he stood for election to South Dakota’s other Senate seat and won, serving his first of three Senate terms.
