Stephen Arthur Frears is an Academy Award-nominated English film director.

After he graduated from Cambridge, Frears contributed to several television series such as the BBC’s ‘Play for Today’. His first film was the 1972 ‘Gumshoe’. What got him noticed was his production of the drama ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ for Channel 4 in 1985, which was released theatrically to great acclaim. In 1988 he made his Hollywood debut with ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and was nominated for an Academy Award for ‘The Grifters’. Since then he has directed ‘The Hi-Lo Country’ (1998), ‘High Fidelity’ (2000), ‘Dirty Pretty Things’ (2003) and ‘Mrs. Henderson Presents’. He was nominated for another Academy Award for his direction of ‘The Queen’.
