Thomas Freston is an American television executive who most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the post-split Viacom, until his resignation on September 5, 2006.
Freston began his career in advertising. In 1981, he was one of the founding members of MTV: Music Television, and as the head of marketing, created the “I want my MTV” ad campaign.
As CEO, Freston used his position to advance his networks’ positions in new markets, both domestic and overseas, receiving increasing ratings every year, and launching several ancillary product lines featuring various segments and characters from popular series within his networks.
