Hanan Ashrawi is a Palestinian Anglican scholar and political activist. She is a protege and later colleague and close friend of Edward Said. In the Palestinian legislative elections held in January 2006, she was reelected to the Palestinian Legislative Council on a national list, ‘The Third Way’, which won two seats out of a total of 132.

Ashrawi’s father, Daoud Mikhail, was a founder of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Her mother, Wadi’a Ass’ad was a devout Christian of Lebanese descent.
