Richard Joseph Durbin is the senior United States Senator from Illinois and ahs served as the Democratic Whip since January 2007. As an attorney in Springfield, Illinois, Durbin lost his campaign for Lieutenant Governor in 1978, but won the Democratic nomination for the 20th Congressional District in 1982.

In 1996 Durbin was elected to the Senate and reelected in 2002. He has served as the Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and the Democratic Whip. In April of 2006, ‘Time’ magazine listed Durbin as one of the America’s 10 Best Senators.
