Brice Marden is an American abstract painter. In his work from the 1960s and 1970s, he used simplified means to achieve what he considered to be highly emotional and subjective representations. More recently, he has begun painting works consisting of swirling and entangling lines in two or more colors, as in the “Cold Mountain” series. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University in 2000.
Marden has been the subject of several shows and retrospectives, beginning with his 1975 retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. The Museum of Modern Art in New York showed “Brice Marden: A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings.” The show will travel to SFMOMA from February 23, 2007 to May 13, 2007.
