John Nathan is an Emmy-award winning director of several documentaries and author of numerous works on Japan. His published works include “Mishima: A Biography”, “Sony: The Private Life”, and “Japan Unbound: A Volatile Nation’s Quest for Pride and Purpose”. His films include “The Japanese, A Film Trilogy: Full Moon Lunch, The Blind Swordsman, Farm Song” and “Daimyo”. In 1982 he won an Emmy Award for directing “The Colonel Goes to Japan”, about the expansion of the Kentuck Fried Chicken fast food franchise in Japan. He is also the translator of Japanese works of such celebrated authors as Yukio Mishima and Kenzaburo Oe.
After graduating from Harvard University, he visited Japan and studied at the University of Tokyo. He is presently the Takashima Professor of Japanese Cultural Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
