Stephen Sestanovich is a former Ambassador-at-large and a George F. Kennan Senior Fellow for Russian and Eurasian Studies. He was Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for policy toward the states of the former Soviet Union, and he directed the Council-sponsored Task Force “Russia’s Wrong Direction: What the United States Can and Should Do.”

Sestanovich’s expertise is Russia and the former Soviet Union, as well as U.S. foreign policy. He is the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor in the Practice of International Diplomacy at Columbia University. He previously worked in the Reagan Administration on the policy planning staff in the Department of State and subsequently as senior director for policy development at the United States National Security Council.
