John Edwards is an American politician and former Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004.

In 1998, Edwards had left his law practice, where he had been given the Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s national award for public service, and was voted Senator for the state of North Carolina. During his time as a senator he was a member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and U.S. Senate Committee on Judiciary. In the years leading up to the 2004 presidential election, Edwards gained the nomination for the Democratic vice president candidate and ran with John Kerry. The two were defeated when George W. Bush and Richard Cheney were re-elected.

In the wake of the 2004 defeat, Edwards became director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?s Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity. He also helped his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, in her activism for breast cancer. On December 27, 2006, Edwards? website announced that he would run for the Democratic nomination for president for the 2008 campaign.
