Jhumpa Lahiri is a writer born in London and raised in Rhode Island. Lahiri’s Indian descent plays a primary role in her two substantial works, ?The Interpreter of Maladies? and the ?Namesake?. Both works focus on the disconnection between first and second generation immigrants in the United States. ?The Interpreter of Maladies? won the 1999 PEN/Hemingway Award for Best Fiction Debut of the Year, and ?The Namesake? has been made into a film directed by Mira Nair with an adapted screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala.
