James B. Steinberg is an American academic and political advisor. He served as Deputy National Security Advisor to Bill Clinton during his second administration. Currently, Steinberg is Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs in Austin, Texas.

His previous positions included a senior fellowship at the International Institute for Strategic Studies and a position as a senior analyst at RAND Corporation. He is currently a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute.
