Geoffrey Canada is an American author and the President and Chief Executive Officer for the Harlem Children?s Zone. He authored “Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence in America” and was the recipient of the first Heinz Award in 1994. In 2005, Geoffrey was named one of “America?s Best Leaders” by “U.S. News and World Report”. In 2006, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg chose him to be co-chair of a task force assigned to significantly reduce poverty in New York City.
Canada is also the founder of the Chang Moo Kwan Martial Arts School. He teaches the principles of Tae Kwon Do to community youth along with anti-violence and conflict resolution techniques. He is also the East Coast Regional Coordinator for the Black Community Crusade for Children.
Canada has the McGraw Prize for Education, the Robin Hood Foundation’s Heroes of the Year Award, “Child Magazine’s” Children’s Champion award, and New York University’s Brennan Legacy Award, among others.
